Spotlighting Charlie and John from London's Independent Visitor service

Charlie is a volunteer at our London Independent Visitor Service. He tells us his experience of volunteering as an Independent Visitor and the relationship he's built with John.
"An Independent Visitor is an adult volunteer who builds a long-term friendship with a young person in care. We’re there as a consistent, trusted presence - whether that’s sharing new experiences, trying out hobbies, or just going for a walk and having a chat.
"It’s about showing up, listening, and being there, no matter what.
Do you feel like this could be you?
"I was introduced to John nine years ago through the London Independent Visitor service - our friendship has opened my eyes and enriched my life in ways I never could have imagined.
"Recently, Action for Children invited me to join their Independent Visitor training day, and I had the privilege of sharing my experience as a volunteer. But the real highlight was John, now 18, being able to join me.
"Listening to him speak with such confidence, emotional intelligence, and honesty was overwhelming - his perceptiveness is remarkable, and despite facing more than his fair share of challenges, he has retained an inspiringly positive outlook. I couldn’t be prouder.

"Now, as he finishes formal education, John is looking to take his first step into the world of work. He’s bright, resilient, and eager to learn - given the right support, there’s no limit to what he can achieve.
