Unlike celebrations such as Christmas, which always falls on December 25th, the exact date of Mother's Day changes each year. The reason why lies in its connection to the Christian festival of Lent.
Mother's Day is celebrated on the fourth Sunday of Lent, a period of fasting and penance observed by Christians leading up to Easter. Lent's start and end dates shift each year based on the church’s approximation of the March equinox (when the Earth is perpendicular to the sun), naturally affecting the date of Mother's Day.
This means that while Mother's Day always falls on a Sunday, the specific date changes annually.

Mother's Day in the UK, also known as Mothering Sunday, has roots in Christianity and is celebrated on the fourth Sunday of Lent. Historically, it was a day that people returned to their 'mother' church, with children often picking flowers along the way to give to their mothers.
Mother's Day in the US, however, began in the early 20th century by Anna Jarvis who started the holiday as a way to honour her mother. It soon become a secular holiday dedicated to mothers, held on the second Sunday in May.
Now that you know the relation of Mother’s Day to the celebration of Lent, it’s easy to remember when Mother’s Day is: Mother’s Day always lands between Pancake Day (Shrove Tuesday) and Easter.
